The Standard

What is the CHMC Certification?

The Caregiver & Home Management Certification (CHMC) is Nigeria's premier professional standard for domestic and home care workers. Developed by COHCASEL in 2021, it fills a critical gap: until CHMC, there was no recognised national benchmark for what a professional caregiver or household manager should know and be able to do.

CHMC is not a short course or a rubber stamp. It is a competency-based certification programme with three progressive tiers, each requiring demonstrated skills, written assessments, background verification, and supervised practice hours.

For families, CHMC is a guarantee. For domestic workers, it is a career ladder — one that opens doors to better-paying placements, diaspora household roles, and eventually, international employment opportunities.

What Makes CHMC Different

Structured Curriculum

Every tier follows a defined syllabus — from basic household hygiene to advanced dementia care protocols — developed with occupational health specialists.

Practical Assessment

Candidates are assessed in real-world scenarios, not just written tests. Skills are demonstrated, observed, and graded by certified assessors.

Background Verification

CHMC certification is contingent on passing a criminal record check, referee verification, and health screening — every time, no exceptions.

Progressive Levels

The Bronze → Silver → Gold progression ensures caregivers grow continuously and families can choose the depth of expertise they need.

International Alignment

The CHMC curriculum is mapped to INA, CACHE Level 3, and NVQ Level 2/3 frameworks — making it recognised by diaspora employers abroad.

Ongoing CPD

Certification isn't a one-time event. Holders must complete Continuing Professional Development hours to maintain and renew their status.

The Three Tiers

Certification Levels

Each tier builds on the last. Every domestic career has a starting point — what matters is that it has a trajectory.

🇺🇸

INA

United States

International Nanny Association

The INA sets the benchmark for professional nanny standards across North America. Our CHMC Silver & Gold programmes are aligned to INA competency frameworks, enabling holders to present credibly to INA-member families globally.

CHMC Mapping Points

  • Child development & safety standards
  • Professional ethics & boundaries
  • Household management principles
  • Employer-nanny agreement framework
🇬🇧

CACHE

United Kingdom

Council for Awards in Care, Health & Education — Level 3

CACHE Level 3 is the UK's leading qualification for childcare and early years professionals. CHMC's curriculum was developed with CACHE alignment in mind — particularly for caregivers seeking British household placements or UK immigration pathways.

CHMC Mapping Points

  • Early childhood education & play
  • Safeguarding & child protection
  • Special educational needs awareness
  • Reflective practice & CPD requirements
🇬🇧

NVQ

United Kingdom

National Vocational Qualification — Levels 2 & 3

The NVQ framework assesses competence in the workplace through observed performance. CHMC's supervised practice hours and assessor sign-off mirror the NVQ evidence portfolio model, making CHMC credentials intuitively understandable to UK employers.

CHMC Mapping Points

  • Competency-based assessment methodology
  • Workplace evidence portfolio approach
  • Supervisor sign-off & observed practice
  • Health & social care unit alignment

Note on equivalency: CHMC is an independent Nigerian certification aligned to — but not formally accredited by — INA, CACHE, or the UK NVQ framework. It is recognised by COHCASEL partner employers and diaspora households who have verified our curriculum against these standards. For formal UK/USA immigration qualification purposes, candidates may need to undergo additional assessment through those bodies.

For Families & Clients

Why CHMC Certification Matters to You

Trusting someone in your home with your child, your parent, or your household is one of the most consequential decisions you make. Certification turns trust from a feeling into a verifiable fact.

Proof, Not Promise

A CHMC certificate is independently verified evidence that your caregiver has been tested on the skills they'll use in your home — not just self-reported by an agency.

Full Background Verification

CHMC holders have passed criminal record checks, referee verification, and a health screening. No certificate is issued before all three clear.

First Aid & Emergency Readiness

Every tier requires first aid training. Bronze holds Level 1; Gold holds advanced emergency response. Your family is never alone in an emergency.

A Public Accountability Standard

Certificates are issued with a unique number that can be publicly verified via our lookup tool. You can check any credential before a caregiver enters your home.

Ethical & Legal Compliance

CHMC training covers professional conduct, confidentiality, and the legal rights of both employers and domestic workers — reducing misunderstandings and disputes.

Ongoing Supervision

COHCASEL's post-placement supervision means CHMC holders continue to be monitored after placement day. Certification creates accountability even after the contract is signed.

I specifically asked for a CHMC Gold caregiver for my mum. It wasn't just about the training — it was knowing someone had actually verified this person before they stepped through her door.
